FAQ's

"Designer Dog"

Are they healthier? Hybrid dogs can still have genetic problems because you are still crossing two first generation dogs, however the percentage of hybrid dogs with genetic problems is much lower than purebred dogs because the gene pool is mixed. Breeders who breed purebred to purebred creating a first generation hybrid believe in hybrid vigor. Vigor means, "Physical or mental strength, energy, or force." Unlike purebred dogs, when you adopt a hybrid, you do not know exactly what the temperament, size of the dog, or exact look of the dog will be. You can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed.  If everything about both breeds matches you and your families personality and lifestyle, than you can most likely assume this cross will work for you.

"Purebred Dog"

A purebred dog is one that has been bred over many generations to breed true. Meaning each puppy that is born looks and has the same temperament and characteristics as one another.  Purebred dogs are beneficial in that, when you buy a purebred dog you know what you are getting. You know how big your puppy will grow and you know basically what type of temperament and care the dog will need.  When one breeds purebred dogs great care must be taken to insure the lines do not become too thin. Even with all the best DNA testing available, genetic problems can occur.

1. What size will the puppy be as an adult?

The guestimated weight is based on many factors some of which are the size of the puppy at a certain age, bone structure and our knowledge of what these parents have produced in tha past. The size of the parents is taken in consideration but is not the sole determining factor. Puppies can vary in sizes within the same litter, the size of a puppy can be a throw back from past generations.

The general rule of thumb (andthumbs are easily broken) is the dog will be 2-3 times its weight at 12 weeks.

Please be aware that Amatskennel does not guarantee weight or size of a puppy. Final weight and size of a puppy is not grounds for a refund.

2. Are the puppies registered? ( do they have papers)

None of the puppies offered by A-Matskennel are intended to be breeders or for breeding stock, we offer our puppies as family companions ONLY. The mixes which include "Designer pups" are not registered. Our purebreds are offered as pets only and the prices do not reflect registration papers. Although our purebreds can be registered we only offer limited registration status which means any offspring can not be registered. Registered puppies will be offered at the market value based on size, quality and sex this may add several hundred dollars to the purchase price. Since we require proof of spay/neuter before papers will be issued you will be paying several hundred dollars for something you will never use.

3. What does the Health Guarantee Cover?

6. What is Coccidia?*
The first thing that has to be considered is that coccidia is very common. It is likely that 30 to 50% of puppies have

coccidia in their stools at some time during their first few months of life.Coccidia is not a worm. It is a microscopic internal parasite (protozoan) common in warm, humid climates. Coccidia can be stress-related. A puppy may have a negative fecal check result from a vet, appear perfectly fine, but show evidence of coccidia as soon as he goes to a new home. Albon, the prescription medication for coccidia, doesn't actually kill it. It washes the puppy's digestive tract, taking the coccidia with it.  It's the puppy's own immune system that eventually will kill any remaining coccidia.

7. What is Giardia?*

Giardia are actually protozoans (single celled organisms)and are commonly found in the intestines of many animals, including dogs. This microscopic parasite clings to the surface of the intestine, or floats free in the mucous lining the intestine. A few percent of dogs and cats will carry Giardia organisms and not show any signs of disease.Actual diarrhea, bloody or mucousy stool often accompanied by gas production is seen most often in affected puppies and kittens.Giardia can have a significant impact on the health status of stressed pups.
